Studio Policy and Information

Lesson Times: 

Students may take in 30-minute, 45-minute, or 1-hour lessons scheduled once a week.  Additional lessons may be scheduled to prepare for major auditions or performances.  Lessons are taught throughout the school year and summer (if possible).

 

Preparation: 

Students are expected to prepare all lesson material assigned to the best of their ability.  Excessive failure to come prepared may result in expulsion from the studio at the teacher's discretion.  The student may have three warnings before expulsion.

 

Practice Time: 

Students are expected to practice their warm-ups and repertoire daily.  The length of practice time will be assigned upon first lesson.

 

Attendance: 

Students are expected to arrive at their lesson on time and fully prepared.  Lessons will not be extended due to tardiness.  However, if a lesson is delayed by the teacher, the full lesson time will be given at a later date that week or the following.  Conflicts with lesson times or dates should be given to the teacher in a timely manner.  A make-up date will be given upon the notification of the anticipated absence.  Lessons skipped without prior notification could result in expulsion from the studio at the teacher's discretion.  Students will be charged for lessons missed if they failed to notify the teacher of their anticipated absences. 

 

Make-up Lessons: 

A lesson missed by the student without proper notice will not be made-up.  A lesson missed by the teacher will be made-up as soon as possible.  It is not usually acceptable to cancel lessons because of a birthday party, sporting event, or other social activity.  Absenteeism is expected to be kept at a bare minimum. 

 

Payment: 

Payment may be given on a monthly or a lesson-by-lesson basis.  Lessons must be paid for in timely fashion.  Students will be charged $15 per half hour.  A $15 fee may be added if the teacher must travel more than 30 miles.

30-minute lesson=$15.00

45-minute lesson=$22.50

1-hour lesson=$30.00

 

Responsibility of the Student:

1.  Undergoing full preparation for each lesson and attend each lesson.

2.  Follow the guidelines pertaining to absenteeism.

3.  Provide all necessary materials for each lesson:

            a. method books

            b. solos/ensembles

            c. instrument

            d. instrument maintenance tools

            e. mutes, tuners, metronomes, etc.

 

Music for Beginning Students:

Students will study from Rubank, Bai Lin, and Pottag Methods and are responsible for providing their method books.  Students are required to purchase Rubank Elementary Method by J.E. Skornicka/Hal Leonard, Bai Lin Lip Flexibilities for All Brass Instruments, and Pottag-Hovey Method for French Horn Book 1.  Students will be given solo repertoire from the teacher as they progress in their skill.

 

Music for Upper Level Students: 

Students will study the Pottag Methods and are responsible for providing their method books.  Students are required to purchase Pottag-Hovey Method for French Horn Books 1 and 2, Preparatory Melodies to Solo Work for French Horn selected from the Schantl series and edited by Max P. Pottag, Kopprasch: 60 Selected Studies for Horn (particularly sold from cornopub.com if possible), Bai Lin Lip Flexibilities for All Brass Instruments (*not required but highly suggested for upper level students), Mozart: Four Horn Concertos and Concert Rondos for Horn with Piano accompaniment unedited version (the cover should not say edited by Barry Tuckwell).  Students are responsible for providing their solo repertoire as assigned by their school directors or by the studio teacher.

 

Accompaniment: 

Students are expected to provided their own accompanist for any solo performances where accompaniment is necessary.

 

Instrument Care: 

Students are expected to properly care for and maintain their instruments regardless of ownership.  The student will learn proper maintenance of their instrument if they have not done so prior.

 

Parent Responsibility:  

Students may need reminders to practice or attend their lesson.  Students and parents are both accountable for consistent, quality practice and lesson attendance.  Never hesitate to call or email the teacher if there is something your child does not understand.
